Trolex Engineering have recently launched a Manually-Operated Cable Reel as part of their TX4920 Cable Reel Series.
The Cable Reel, which can be fitted with either a Weather Protected TX4845, or an Explosion Protected TX4705 Slip Ring, is suitable for temperature limits of -20°C to +45°C. With a ring current of 20 Amps and maximum voltage of 600V, the cable reel is suitable for a maximum speed of 100rpm with an IP65 rated enclosure.
The length of the cable/hose can be adjusted to suit the specification and the external material can be made in a choice of aluminium, 316 stainless steel or carbon steel with epoxy paint system.
Other options include a fluid/gas swivel, cable guide, bump stop, protective covers, special paint systems or colours and a higher current.

Ulstein Equipment BV recently selected Trolex Engineering to design, manufacture and deliver our TX4820 Electrical Slip Ring Units, to interface between the LEBUS winch and the McCartney Umbilical, on the WBS 3020 ROV Umbilical Winch for the Fall-Pipe Tower Project, on the Van Oord Subsea Rock Installation Vessel ‘Bravenes’.
Ulstein Equipment BV worked with Trolex Engineering enabling us to provide highly-specialised service and support to determine the correct arrangement and structure of the slip rings, connections and transfers to ensure flawless integration between the winch and the umbilical.
The TX4820 slip ring is capable of both electrical and fibre passes, both single and multi mode. This application required 25 electrical slip rings for both signal and power, rated up to 30 Amps, 3.4kV, incorporating a 3-Pass Fibre Optic Rotary Joint; 2 for Single-Mode and 1 Multi-Mode. Each slip ring has 2 junction boxes; one winch-side, one deck-side, with 3 metre flying leads and hose adaptors.

Following a recent external audit by our Notified Body, SGS Baseefa Ltd, we are pleased to have received an 'A' rating for our QA System, considering it to be suitable for maintaining our QA Notification and QAR, enabling us to continue in the design and manufacture of products for use in hazardous areas.
This notification is a mandatory requirement for companies who design and manufacture explosion-protected equipment, providing confidence that the products supplied comply with their certified design.
Hazardous area apparatus is classified according to the maximum surface temperature produced under the maximum operating capacity at an ambient temperature of 45°C, or as otherwise specified. The standard classifications are:
This is the lowest temperature at which a gas, vapour or dust will be ignited. If a potentially hazardous explosive gas, vapour or dust is present, the equipment used within the installation must be given an appropriate 'T' classification in order to maintain the integrity. For example, if that potentially hazardous explosive gas is hydrogen, then all equipment used must meet the 'T6' rating. This means that all equipment used must not have a surface temperature of greater than 85°C. Any equipment used that can generate a hotter surface temperature of greater than 85°C must not be used as this will then increase the likelihood of an explosion by igniting the hydrogen in the atmosphere.
A large percentage of offshore applications require a 'T3' rating. The majority of our products are rated 'T4, T5 or T6' so are therefore suitable for 'T3' applications. However, if an application requires a 'T5' rated-product, a 'T4' rated product would not be suitable.
During 2015, Trolex Engineering developed 4 new products covering a range of applications including winches, cranes and FPSO’s.
The TX4707 was the first to be added to our range. Intended for space-limited winch applications, the slip ring is only 95mm long in total, with a 53mm cover length, containing 2 rings rated at 8 Amps/2000V per ring. Conforming to the requirements of both ATEX and IECEx standards, the unit is capable of operating in a wide range of temperatures, from -40°C to +60°C, to suit the application.
Next up, was our TX4714. This slip ring is intended for smaller crane applications where only a small number of power and signal rings are required. The maximum supply voltage per ring is 100 Amps/750V, with a maximum throughput current of 420A (excluding earths and neutrals). Again, this slip ring conforms to the requirements of both ATEX and IECEx standards, and can be used for power, signal and I.S. circuits.
The next slip ring to be added to our range was again for crane applications. The TX4816 slip ring is a weather-protected, is individually rated up to 770V/100 Amps and may be used for power, signal and I.S. circuits, with a maximum total throughput of 1166 Amps.
Last but not least, the TX4789 Slip Ring was developed for use on the swivel stack of an FPSO. The slip ring contains 40 slip ring circuits, rated up to 500V ac/250 Amps, with a 10 Amp maximum current on each individual ring circuit. The unit conforms to the requirements of IECEx standards, and is capable of operating in temperatures of -20°C to +50°C.

Fibre Optic Rotary Joints are the optical equivalent of the electrical slip ring. It allows uninterrupted transmission of an optical signal while rotating along the fibre axis. A FORJ’s only function is to provide connection between two or multiple fibre cables whilst allowing free rotation between them. Therefore, it is critically important to ensure that the device has low insertion loss, small insertion loss variation (wow), and high return loss (a measure that characterises the amount of reflection a FORJ generates).
Combined with electrical slip rings, FORJ’s add a new dimension to traditional rotary joints. FORJ’s can be combined with proven Trolex Slip Rings to future-proof systems allowing ample bandwith to the end user.
