A Slip Ring is an electrochemical device which allows the transmission of power and electrical signals from a stationary to a rotating structure. Slip Rings can be used in any electromechanical system which requires unrestrained, intermittent or continuous rotation while transmitting power and/or data. It can improve mechanical performance, simplify system operation and eliminate damage-prone wires fixed/hanging from moveable joints.
The Slip Ring’s function is to make one or more continuous electrical connections from points in a stationary section to points in a rotating section.
Trolex Engineering have 40 years experience in engineering, design and manufacture of Explosion Protected equipment and rotary solutions. All design and manufacturing is carried out at our 2 offices and workshops in the UK.
This is where the detailed design and development of the product’s form starts. The main tool for design and development is CAD – from a simple 2D drawing to a 3D model. This covers both mechanical and electrical. Once the design is verified, the bought-out components are sourced, with the aid of procurement systems.
Engineering is the application of science for finding solutions. Design is the creative expression of this knowledge…
Once the design of the product’s components is complete, the method of manufacturing is defined. The raw materials are taken through to final components, inspected and passed through to assembly.
Final components are fixed together to produce a final assembly before being passed through to test. A good assembly process can increase efficiency and quality, using different techniques and methodologies.
Within all the processes above, we use the problem-prevention method, concurrent engineering, providing better and more immediate communication between departments.
TEST & DESPATCH
All our products are tested to stringent safety standards prior to despatch, including tests such as continuity, dielectric & insulation resistance, volt drop, torque, dimensional checks and temperature transmission.
The IECEx Scheme, The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) System for global certification to standards for electrical equipment in hazardous locations, plays an important role in the global certification of hazardous location equipment. The Scheme seeks to simplify and advance the export of equipment through its harmonized international standards, facilitating global trade and international growth in hazardous locations like oil and gas sites.
It is a certification system which verifies compliance with IEC international standards relating to safety in hazardous areas. It covers equipment, service facilities and the competency of personnel. IECEx provides an internationally accepted means of proving compliance with these standards and means products can be supplied to the market without the need for additional tests.
All our TX47XX range of products are all certified to IECEx Standards. The TX4799 FPSO Slip Ring was our first IECEx-certified slip ring, which was approved in February 2008.
In Great Britain, the requirements of the Directive were put into effect on 1st March 1996, through BIS Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 1996 (SI 1996/192).
Since 1st July 2003, it has been mandatory under EU Law that all equipment for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere must conform to specific safety standards.
Obviously, slip rings are a key element of our company. However, we are able to offer other products to complement the slip rings.
We have been designing, manufacturing and assembling slip rings for FPSO applications since 1992. The first slip ring we produced for this application was the TX4790, which was ordered in July 1992.
The unit was certified to ATEX Standards by Baseefa in February 1993, and conformed to the requirements of EN 50 014 (1977), EN 50 018 (1977) and EN 50 019 (1977).
Today, we continue to design and manufacture a range of units to suit these applications. Now, they are typically built using electrical slip rings combined with fibre optic rotary joints, providing uninterrupted delivery of electrical power and signals, alongside fibre optic signals, in hazardous areas.
